Wine CharacteristicsBlaufränkisch is an ancient indigenous variety from Central Europe. Widely planted in Austria and in Hungary where it is known as Kékfrankos. This opulent, opaquely dark, even hedonistic red combines New World fruit-forwardness and Old World structure. Blackberry, chocolate and Damson plum flavors are backed up by sweet vanilla and spice notes with a silky mid-palate followed by soft tannins. Food Pairings A classic match for this wine is Hungarian Pörkölt (goulash in the US) that has been simmered slowly over an outdoor fire. A combination of beef and pork works well but the most authentic choice would be wild boar. Another match would be Bison Burgers topped with thin slices of Hungarian hot yellow peppers. Make sure to use paprika in your preparation, preferably from the Szeged region of Hungary. Jo étvagyat kivánok! Listen to Wine Talk from the Finger Lakes about the Blaufränkisch.
