From the Winemaker: 2007 Harvest Report

April 01, 2008

In the Finger Lakes each year brings its own set of trials and tribulations that keep growers and winemakers at a heightened state of preparedness. Formulaic wine production doesn't work here.

The warmer than usual winter temperatures had kept the grape buds at almost 100% viability which is rare in this region. Just when we thought we were out of the woods the dreaded late April frost touched our vineyards. Fortunately the crop was only reduced by 25% from the freeze resulting in a slightly smaller crop than usual. The upside is that smaller crops usually result in more concentrated flavors. The next hurdle was the late summer drought that further reduced the crop by limiting berry size. Just as we were edging the precipice of serious drought damage timely rains came in September, revitalizing the grapes. Now with the tides turned the 2007 harvest was poised to be one of the best crops yet in the new millennium. With the vintage in the cellar and the wines starting to awake from their winter slumber I can safely say that 2007 is exceptional!

The whites are full and ripe, balanced with perfect acidity. The reds are intensely aromatic, richly colored and layered with complex flavors that go beyond the normal fruit profile.

Once again our Reserve series (winery/website only) have been replenished with Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Old Vines Riesling and a surprise or two that we'll reveal a few years from now.

Egesegedre! (To your health in Hungarian)
