Heron Hill Dessert Wines Win Double Gold

June 01, 2008

Heron Hill Winery continues it tradition of producing award-winning wines that showcase the Finger Lakes ability to compete in the national and international wine markets.  Their 2006 Ingle Vineyard Late Harvest Riesling and their 2006 Late Harvest Vidal Blanc were both awarded double-gold medals at the 2008 Taster’s Guild International Wine Judging.  Established in 1987, Taster’s Guild consists of over 40 active chapters throughout the country that bring together consumers, wine, food and the wine and food service industries.  These two winning wines exemplify winemaker Thomas Laszlo’s expertise in crafting world-class dessert wines.  His experience making Icewine in Canada and Tokaji in Hungary led him to the Finger Lakes with the goal of making sweet, unique wines and terroir-driven Rieslings.  Preparing for the production of Late Harvest and Icewines is extremely labor intensive and can be viewed as a bit of a risk.  Grapes need to be left on the vines well past normal harvest dates and are thus more susceptible to issues of weather or pests.  Vines often need to be netted by hand to support the berries and keep them from dropping to the ground as well as to protect the fruit from birds.  Harvesting is always done by hand so that only the best berries are chosen.  With low yields of the highest quality, these wines capture the essence of the grapes.  Featuring eight dessert wines currently available ranging from $20-$100, Heron Hill shows their commitment to this traditional method of wine production.
